Juniors take on the Seniors for rights to Olympiad.

I like this idea put forward by a parent of a National Junior during the train ride to Singapore. I would love to be involved. Put a team of the top Juniors together. And give them centralised "training" for maybe 3 or more days. The strength of our Juniors is that they share with one another. Then lets have the fight in one big tournament. Let the Seniors prove they are still relevant and deserve the Olympiad trip.

This is the fairest solution. I think this would be one tournament that Malaysia would like to see. Maybe the Juniors are not up to the Seniors in terms of technical understanding yet but I think if I can get them to work together for 3 days in a close and positive environment they can give the seniors a surprise. These boys can still fight. The seniors are no longer fighting. That will make all the difference in my opinion.

Note: There is no need for a trainer. The Juniors shared/combined knowledge will be enough. All we need to do is to facilitate this. Working for and fighting this tournament may wake everyone up.

We need to see success and new milestones to change our negative culture. Let Mal/Singapore be the first of many more milestones in the new annal of Malaysian chess.

  1. Edward, Evan and Tariq was involved in a knock out against the seniors in the Malaysia masters and were soundly beaten.

At the moment, I see only Edward closing on the seniors. You don't need a competition to find the result. None of the juniors had break FIDE 2200. You have to be fair to the seniors as well.

Giving juniors a exposure to the Olympiad is another story. I think the Olympaid had taken Edward to another level.

  2. Note the new conditions. They are sequestered for 3 to maybe 5 days and have intensive sharing. The new condition may produce different results. The fight will be good even for the seniors. This may mean they will have to change their strategy of only playing to maintain their rating. At the end of the day the seniors have to ask themselves this question. Are they still really fighting to move up? I think this tournament will be good for all in its own way. For the juniors, to see what it takes and for the seniors to move out of their comfort zone. Who knows this may become the tournament that will galvanise Mas or Mok to really go for the GM title. For sure something needs to be done or the next Olympiad will be no different from the last.

  3. you talk a lot, why dont you get ready some cash to pay the seniors to "teach" those kids a lesson. Who would want to play a chess game for free?

  4. Have you got a better idea to move our chess forward? Is this my problem or the problem we all have in our chess community? Why are you offended by a suggestion? And why do you need to hide? Do think on this.

  5. You should be able to differentiate ideal and reality. What you are talking is an ideal state of chess in Malaysia, whereby you need to come back to reality. You want malaysian chess to improve, nothing wrong with that, give us the paper work, the draft, the recipe. Dont just sit back, talk, and type. If you put all these words in to action, everyone will support you. I guess you should close down this blog and start putting them into action

  6. You make many assumptions and presumptions. You speak for the Seniors like you are one of them and they cannot speak for themselves. You assume that I am not doing anything. And then you tell me what to do and think. And then you hide. Tell me first who you are and what you have done. Maybe then you may have locus standi to speak as you do. What is your real agenda here?

  7. I dont speak for anyone nor have i done anything for malaysian chess. But one thing everyone knows is that i dont just talk without actions. Actions speak LOUDER then words. Please bear that in your mind

  8. You are a strange one. How can anyone know that you dont just talk? You are a ghost without a name. But thank you for clarifying that you dont do anything for Malaysian chess but just talking here. And yet the suggestion from that parent frightens you to the point you lose your civility.

  9. I agree with Mr.Raymond,why would you(the other anonymous)hide yourself?Yeah,maybe you're one of the Senior?You can see some bright star ahead(U 20:Edward,Tariq,Zhuo Ren U 18:Mark Siew,Yit San,Yit Ho,Jun Jian,Eng Chiam U 15:Roshan,Jun Keat,Irfan haqqim,Jun Feng,Iskandar Danial Adam,Daniel Iskandar Arif,Fikri Saleh,Nuriman Yahaya U12:Li Tian,Jun Hao and so on...

I do think they have rights to play in a tournament and all this name versus senior players that wants to protect their rights..
    We'll see then!

  10. My point is that if you no longer want to fight for the Country then you should make way for those that still want to. The juniors may not do as well but they have many more years of development and fight in them.

Anyway I dont think we should just take it away from them too. So the best solution is to fight it out. Let them show us that they are still hungry to win.

The Olympiad should not become a old man, has been club.

  11. Agreed. But from what I see,the most impressed me is Yeoh Li Tian. The most improvement is Iskandar Danial Adam(played for only 2 years before) and Mark Siew..The youngster could be better than elite players tho...

  12. Dont forget Nabil and Syakir. I really think if we can get them all to share together in one big tournament, everyone will benefit. The knowledge we need to move to the next level is already with us. But only if we learn to work together, to share knowledge for the good of all.

  13. Sorry, add them too,i have forgotten about them. They are on the lists too.Somehow,I can see if we put top juniors together, about 40 juniors(who really are commited) and trained together a couple of days before the tournament to face senior players, thats a WOW!

  14. Yes, I think the combined knowledge of the juniors will produce some surprises. Put them all together and let them share with one another. Then we'll see.

  15. Whatever it is, juniors should be given chance to play and compete seniors. Unfair to them by just comparing 'below 2200 elo' to seniors. Obviously, rating is JUST rating. Raymond is right by offering ideas SR VS JR, then we can get the actual results, who are better, perhaps. At least junior can learn something. Congrats to more than 90% juniors line up whom beat s'pore for the first time. No more comfort zone, everyone have to fight for the betterment of the future chess

  17. You can't send more than 1 team to the Olympiad if you are not the host nation. If not, don't you think China will send 58 teams?
