What happens if the Olympiad is open to all strong players?

Would this force the seniors to play in more competitions to stay in the game? Would that be good for them? Would that be good for the upcoming players? Would this provide incentives for the strong seniors who have not had the chance to represent the country for whatever reason to strive to improve further?

Would this be good for Malaysian chess? No more free rides? Yesterdays achievements are yesterdays achievments. It is to be respected for sure but it is tomorrow that we are heading to. And we still have quite a journey to go. Which road will help us to that first GM in Malaysia?

  1. The Olympiad is not open to all players? Then how do they choose the players?

  4. Again you guys miss context. Obviously what I am saying is we need new selection criteria. Take a deep breathe, overcome the sense of panic you are feeling and read again. Alternatively dont come to this blog if it gives you such anxieties. Bury you head, thats your way forward. Bravo.

  7. New selection criteria? Any suggestions? Or,who will determine it?

Is there anything wrong with the current method? Although undeniably we have not been improving as fast as other countries. We have still improve by having more IMs. Mok 10 years journey showed determination. Yee Weng work with what he can afford (joining DATMO year after year) and probably train real hard. As for the elusive GM, maybe Li Tian.

  8. That answer lies within the ambit of MCF. So we should let them make that decision and then monitor the results. Yes, there is something seriously wrong with the current method. Progress is relative. To stay in the same place we have to change as fast as them. To catch up we have to change faster. And to surpass them we have to change even faster still. Yes, I see Li Tian as a possible candidate. He is a great talent. All we need to do now is to have a postive and supportive culture to help him and the others who aspire along.

  9. Another point is this. If we have a competitive model for Olympiad selection, I believe it will also be good for the seniors like Mok and Yee Weng. No automatic selection means they will have to continuosly sharpen their skills and make sure they stay ahead of the game even among other strong seniors but who may not have represented the country or have high rating. This open competition ensures no one can rest on their laurels and gives others a chance to fight for the honour of representing the Country. Something that may have been lost along the way. As I see it the Country wins even if maybe an individual may lose in the fight. There will be sharing of knowledge from the fight. So in actuality it is win win. The loser gains in knowledge.

  11. Please explain your fears my friend. How do I win from this? Btw, whining is when you sit down like a child to cry and expect others to carry you. A little like a free ride.
