An interesting point is the one about madness which I believe Jimmy has also touched on peripherally before.
I think if you look at chess as purely adversarial, then over time one sees more and more enemies and that road leads to madness.
On the other hand if we look at all our contacts as teachers, then it leads to self improvement and learning. Can this way also lead to a strong GM? I think so.
Chess is a double edged sword. It can be used to build or it can be used to destroy.
