R, I think Malaysia, with its culture of focusing on straight A's in exams, is not ready yet. When? Maybe after our Education Policy is completely overhauled.
Do you think any Malaysian parent (you for instance) is willing to sacrifice your child's formal education? I don't have any child yet, so I can't comment fairly. But Malaysian society still consider Chess as a Game, not worth focusing on. This should change.
Actually I am willing to defer formal education but it is Mark's decision. He is old enough to decide now. How I see things is that our education doesnt teach our kids how to be thinkers. I take the example of Mr Yan for example with only standard 6. And he is a powerful thinker and accomplished much. My believe is that if Mark can really learn the lessons from chess, he will come out a winner anyway. Whether he becomes GM or not. But I come from a business family where risk taking is part and parcel of how we were brought up. So it may be different for others. So this is not a question for the education system although improvements would be good. This is a question that must be asked individually. What price are you prepared to pay, what risk are you willing to undertake? And this question must be answered by the player not the parent. It is their life afterall.
